Family Worship

Lord’s Day 2

Starting January 4, 2026

These elements are the best for families new to family worship.

Call to Worship

Hear God call the family to worship and respond in unison:

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!
Serve the Lord with gladness!
Come into his presence with singing!                            Psalm 100:1-2

Or:

Praise the Lord!
Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
His steadfast love endures forever!                                 Psalm 106:1

Confession

(Optional) Take a moment and give each family member an opportunity to confess their sins verbally.

The father prays on behalf of the family:

Almighty and most merciful Father,
   we have sinned against you
and done what was evil in your sight.                          Psalm 51:4
We have done things we should not do,
and we have not done things we should do.
O Lord, have mercy upon us.                                            Psalm 51:1
Grant us to live a godly and righteous life,
To the glory of your holy Name. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

Receive the Word of God as the father reads:

God has said in His Word that:
We have an advocate with the Father,
   Jesus Christ the righteous.
He is the propitiation for our sins.                                    1 John 2:1-2
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just
to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us
from all unrighteousness.                                                1 John 1:9

*Song of Adoration

Sing a song of your choosing with your family in worship to God.

Suggested song of the week: “God Our Father We Adore Thee “

*The Requirements of God

The father holds out his fist and asks the question which the whole family responds while raising a finger for each answer:

What does the Lord your God require of you?
1. Fear the Lord your God
2. Walk in all his ways
3. Love him
4. Serve the Lord with all your heart
   and all your soul
5. Keep the commandments and
statutes of the LORD                               Deuteronomy 10:12-13

*Gloria Patri or Doxology

Sing together:

Gloria Patri:
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen. Amen.

Or:

Doxology:
Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him all creatures here below;
Praise Him above you heavenly hosts;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Memory Verse

Either recite the memory verse together or have the children do it individually.

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.

Bible Study

Weekly Bible study for older children/teens:

Colossians 1:9-14

Weekly Bible study for younger children:

Day 1

Read Genesis 2:5-7.

Q. What did God use to form man?
            A. The dust of the ground (dirt).
Q. Why did God make us from the dirt of the ground?
            A. We are connected to His creation
Q. How did God give man life?
            A. Take a deep breath into your nose. God caused the man’s first breath by breathing into His nose.

Day 2

Read Genesis 2:8-9.

Q. What was the name of the garden God planted?
A. Eden Q. God planted all sorts of trees in the garden, but there were two special trees. What were they called?
            A. The tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil
Q. What was special about the tree of life?
            A. When its fruit was eaten, it gave them life.

Day 3

Read Genesis 2:15-17.

Q. What did God put man into the garden of Eden to do?
            A. To work it and take care of it.
Q. Is work good or bad?
            A. It is good.
Q. Do you like to work? What kind of work do you enjoy doing?
            A. Let them answer.
Q. What did God tell the man that he could not eat of?
            A. The tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
Q. What would happen if the man ate the fruit of this tree?
            A. They would die.
Q. In these verses, God made His first covenant with man. Do you know what a covenant is?
            A. A covenant is an agreement between two people in a relationship. A marriage is an example of a covenant. A man and woman agree together to love one another no matter what until they die. God made a covenant with Adam in which he could eat freely of any tree except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil or he would die.
Q. Do you think that the man would keep God’s covenant?
            A. Let them answer. We will find out next week!

*Prayer

Take turns letting everyone pray and conclude with the Lord’s Prayer in unison:

Our Father in heaven,
   Hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come,
   your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
   and forgive us our debts,
   as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation
   but deliver us from evil.
For yours is the kingdom, and the power,
   and the glory, forever. Amen.

*Apostles’ Creed

Confess together what you believe about the Christian faith:

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
   creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
   He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried.
   He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
   He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
   the holy catholic Church,
   the communion of saints,
   the forgiveness of sins,
   the resurrection of the body,
   and the life everlasting. Amen.
