Family Worship

Lord’s Day 3

Starting January 11, 2026

These elements are the best for families new to family worship.

Call to Worship

Hear God call the family to worship and respond in unison:

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!
Serve the Lord with gladness!
Come into his presence with singing!                            Psalm 100:1-2

Or:

Praise the Lord!
Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
His steadfast love endures forever!                                 Psalm 106:1

Confession

(Optional) Take a moment and give each family member an opportunity to confess their sins verbally.

The father prays on behalf of the family:

Almighty and most merciful Father,
   we have sinned against you
and done what was evil in your sight.                          Psalm 51:4
We have done things we should not do,
and we have not done things we should do.
O Lord, have mercy upon us.                                            Psalm 51:1
Grant us to live a godly and righteous life,
To the glory of your holy Name. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

Receive the Word of God as the father reads:

God has said in His Word that:
We have an advocate with the Father,
   Jesus Christ the righteous.
He is the propitiation for our sins.                                    1 John 2:1-2
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just
to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us
from all unrighteousness.                                                1 John 1:9

*Song of Adoration

Sing a song of your choosing with your family in worship to God.

Suggested songs of the week:

*The Requirements of God

The father holds out his fist and asks the question which the whole family responds while raising a finger for each answer:

What does the Lord your God require of you?
1. Fear the Lord your God
2. Walk in all his ways
3. Love him
4. Serve the Lord with all your heart
   and all your soul
5. Keep the commandments and
statutes of the LORD                               Deuteronomy 10:12-13

*Gloria Patri or Doxology

Sing together:

Gloria Patri:
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen. Amen.

Or:

Doxology:
Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him all creatures here below;
Praise Him above you heavenly hosts;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Bible Study

Weekly Bible study for older children/teens:

Colossians 1:15-20

Weekly Bible study for younger children:

Day 1

Read Genesis 3:1-6.

Q. What kind of creature spoke with the woman?
            A. A serpent.
Q. The Bible says the servant was crafty. What does that mean?
            A. The serpent was deceitful and was good at being tricky.
Q. The serpent said to the woman, “Did God actually say?” What was he trying to get the woman to do?
            A. He wanted her to doubt God.
Q. Why should we not doubt God?
            A. Because God always tells the truth.
Q. What was the serpent trying to get the woman to do?
            A. To eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
Q. Were the man and woman allowed to eat of that tree?
            A. No.
Q. What would happen if they ate from that tree?
            A. They would die.
Q. The serpent told the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” What did the serpent tell them the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil would do for them?
            A. It would make them like God, knowing the difference between good and evil.
Q. The woman desired the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil because it would make her wise like God. What did she do next?
A.She ate the fruit and gave it to her husband to eat.

Day 2

Read Genesis 3:14-15.

Q. What did God curse the serpent to do?
            A. To move around on its belly and eat dust the rest of its life.
Q. God said that He would put constant hatred between the serpent and the woman’s children. Then God said, “he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” Can you guess who this is talking about?
            A. This passage is talking about Jesus. The serpent represents sin and God is saying that one day Jesus would come and crush the head of the serpent, taking away our sins.
Q. What was the woman’s punishment for eating the fruit?
            A. Having babies would be extremely painful and marriage will be a lot more difficult than it was supposed to be.

Day 3

Read Genesis 3:17-19.

Q. What was Adam’s punishment for eating the fruit?
            A. His work would be a lot harder. He would also die and his body would return to the dust from which it came.
Q. What curses did God put on the earth?
            A. Thorns and thistles would grow meaning that the earth would now bring forth all sorts of difficulties for us.
Q. Adam and Eve had sinned against God when they ate the fruit. Do you know what sin is?
            A. Sin is when we disobey God.
Q. Adam broke God’s covenant and brought sin and death into this world. How does this affect you and me?
            A. The reason we die is because of Adam’s sin and we are all born with a sinful nature.
Q. What is a nature?
            A. Our nature is the way that we are at our core.
Q. Let’s think about the nature of some animals in this world. What is the nature of a monkey?
            A. They climb trees and eat bananas.
Q. What is the nature of a bird?
            A. They fly and eat worms and bugs.
Q. What is the nature of a fish?
            A. To swim in the water.
Q. When we say that we have a sinful nature, we are saying what about human beings?
            A. That we sin because we are sinful creatures.
Q. What are the consequences for our sin?
            A. The Bible says that the wages of sin is death in Romans 6:23. Sin brings all manners of suffering and death into the world.
Q. What are some consequences that have happened because of your sins?
            A. Let them answer.
Q. Is there anyway we can have our sins forgiven?
            A. Yes. Through Jesus Christ who died on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins and rose again on the third day to give us new life.

*Prayer

Take turns letting everyone pray and conclude with the Lord’s Prayer in unison:

Our Father in heaven,
   Hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come,
   your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
   and forgive us our debts,
   as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation
   but deliver us from evil.
For yours is the kingdom, and the power,
   and the glory, forever. Amen.

*Apostles’ Creed

Confess together what you believe about the Christian faith:

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
   creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
   He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried.
   He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
   He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
   the holy catholic Church,
   the communion of saints,
   the forgiveness of sins,
   the resurrection of the body,
   and the life everlasting. Amen.
